GHOST-HUNTING GEAR
When it comes to cool gadgets, only Batman
and James Bond can rival paranormal investigators. Here are
some basics that are the most popular in ghost hunting:
Digital audio Refers to the small digital
sound recorders used in investigations or to a recording media.
Digital infrared camera Captures images
invisible to people. Images are feed processed by a computer
for examination.
K-2 meter A device, specially calibrated
for paranormal investigations, that measures magnetic fields.
Some believe it can be used to train a spirit to intensify
its magnetic field as a form of communication.
MiniDV A small digital video recorder.
Thermal-imaging digital camera Records
images of long-wavelength infrared (IR) radiation, sometimes
referred to as heat, which is invisible to people. This allows
the capture of images in even total darkness, or through smoke
or fog.

TIPS FROM THE GHOST PROS
If there's something strange in your neighborhood,
and you're the one you want people to call, keep in mind these
few basic tips from the best of the ghost busters:
n Jason Hawes: The most difficult part of
the investigation is trying to get into the clients head and
trying to understand the person you're there to help. Some
of these people are great; they're normal people just like
you and I, but we've also dealt with people in the beginning
stages of schizophrenia ... You never know whose house you're
walking into, and you need to always remember that.
n Grant Wilson: You never ever want to overlook
anything, be it (paranormal or normal). You don't want to
overlook paranormal evidence and just brush it off as some
excuse you just made up. But you don't want to brush off the
science just because itd be easier to believe its an entity.
n Dave Schrader: I would suggest attending
classes, reading about paranormal investigating, maybe asking
to tag along on an investigation not necessarily participate,
but watch and learn ... for about six to eight months before
you investigate.
n Hawes: I recommend people just go grab some
cheap camcorders, some cheap digital (audio) recorders and
start off that way, and build their equipment as they need
to, and as they financially can.
n Wilson: You can go so far as to use a compass
instead of an EMF (electromagnetic field, see Spirit Guide
sidebar) detector. Its not going to be as accurate but at
least you'll get some response.
n Schrader: Never rely too heavily on one
piece of equipment ... Use a good eclectic mix of all devices.
SPIRIT GUIDE
Ghost hunters don't speak in tongues, but
they do have their own lingo. Here are a few key words to
know:
Continuance Commonly referred to as
life after death, survival of the psyche post-cessation of
the biological organism that had generated it.
Electromagnetism (also, electromagnetic field,
or EMF) A force given off by electric charges; found
in anything that uses electricity. Some believe spikes in
electromagnetism can be tied to paranormal activity.
Entity A disembodied consciousness
commonly referred to as a ghost, spirit or demon.
EVP (electronic voice phenomena) Disembodied
voices and sounds picked up by recording devices.
Orb Spherical image, usually translucent
white, though sometimes reddish or bluish, which inexplicably
registers on film and videotape.
Intelligent haunting An incident in
which a ghost interacts with the living. The entity might
be trying to win a persons assistance on something or just
trying to scare the crap out of him.
Residual haunting Psychic imprint of
an incident that is repeatedly played out and witnessed by
someone living. Ghosts in these time-displacements often seem
unaware of observers.
Vortex A gateway that opens from the
spirit world letting entities into ours.
