On Halloween, while sidewalks fill with costumed spooks, two
local men will be hunkered down listening for the real thing.
During an Oct. 11 paranormal investigation
on the grounds of the Indian Temple Mound Museum, members
of Fort Walton Paranormal heard what they believe might be
ghost voices in the old Camp Walton Schoolhouse and Garnier
Beach Post Office.
The two men who founded the group have scheduled
a second investigation on Halloween. Amateur ghost hunters
can tag along for $10, but there's only room for 30. All proceeds
will go to the museum.
"I've always believed there was ghosts,"
said Chris Hathcock of Fort Walton Beach, who founded Fort
Walton Paranormal with James Hoffman.
"I believe that spirits will come back,
try to communicate with you, let you know they're there,"
Hoffman said.
The two men became interested after Hoffman
and his wife started noticing unusual things around their
home two years ago.
Between them, they had lost three of their
parents in the space of a few years. After the birth of their
baby, doors closed without warning, shadows flitted through
rooms and the baby's pacifiers would roll off the entertainment
center, Hoffman said.
Hathcock and Hoffman did research on the Internet
and began to purchase the equipment needed for investigations.
They've done nine or 10 so far, with the Indian Temple Mound
investigation being one of the more exciting.
Using digital recorders, they detected unexplained
noises on the mound, in the schoolhouse and what appeared
to be a murmured conversation in the old post office building.
They realize that having 30 people with them
on Halloween might hamper their chances of finding more evidence
of paranormal activity, but they are willing to try.
"We're pretty much supposed to show up
and show people some of the ghost equipment that we have,"
Hoffman said. "And just walk around and try to find ghosts."
They said when they tell people about their
nonprofit organization, they are met with skepticism.
"I would say that the majority of the
people are skeptical," Hathcock said. "That's fine.
There's no scientific evidence of ghosts existing. But I believe
there's an afterlife."
And for folks looking for real-life ghost
detectors, they've been a blessing.
"A lot of people, when they have activity
in their home, they don't know what to do," Hoffman said.
"They think they're going crazy."
